“There are no shortcuts to endurance. You have to train yourself to make peace with the long route…every day. And do it and love where it is taking you.”
I constantly battle my desire to over train. My day always feels so much more productive when I workout in the morning and that feeling drives me to want to train everyday. Forty years in and I know that rest is required to continue to progress, but I still hate it.
My plan for the rest of the year and all of next year is to train 5 days a week and take two full days off with nothing more than stretching and mobility on those days. My basic training schedule looks something like:
- Monday – Rest day
- Tuesday – Functional training
- Wednesday – Track workout
- Thursday – Function training
- Friday – Rest Day
- Saturday – Run
- Sunday – Run
With three marathons and a 72 hour run race planned for the year I have to increase my running. I would like to get in four days of running and that would require a two-a-day session. That may end up being on Tuesday evening and would be a 5-6 mile tempo run.
